When Jim Laurita and Dan Stevenson headed down the strip during qualifying at the 2014 Summit Racing NHRA Nationals last weekend, neither expected to kill their hood scoops during the lap. Funny thing about that…both did. Laurita was the first one that saw a big volcano come out of his throttle bodies and then Stevenson, closing in on the timing traps at the quarter mile mark had a big popp and it mangled his scoop as well. If you’ll remember, Stevenson at some wall at the Atlanta NHRA event and had been working to repair the paint since then. Only days before Norwalk, the car was fixed up and ready to go…and then BOOM.
Neither car was hurt bad enough to prevent more qualifying attempts but one of the things that captured us about this video is that it is pretty rare to see both cars pop on the same lap at different times. I was calling the run and thankfully I was paying attention and staring out the window (not at the announcer screen, aspiring announcers) and saw both pops when they happened. Because the throttle blades were open on both cars, the intake manifolds were saved from certain doom.
Troy Coughlin was the ultimate winner of the Pro Mod race in his turbocharged Corvette but he did have to stare down the nitrous Camaro of Ricky Smith in the finals. Smith did not suffer a nitrous explosion but he did suffer a parachute failure that sent him into the sand trap at the end of the track…twice.

Takes alot to be a good announcer . I’ve heard too many monotoners , too many big voices that dont know squat about the sport or the track . You sound great kinda like Steve Wong from div 6.
