When Ford rolled out the 2016 Mustang Cobra Jet at SEMA, everyone loved the way it looked and immediately began asking the pertinent questions like, “how quick is it?” Of course Ford answered none of those questions because that’s not how they roll but they seemed very confident that the Cobra Jets would have plenty for anyone else that wants to line up next to them at the strip. Video has now emerged of the 2016 Mustang Cobra Jet engine package being dyno flogged and that video comes from the guys at SVTPerformance.com and they had the inside line on some footage of the 5.0L Coyote engine with its 2.9L Whipple blower making pulls.
According to the video and the story from SVT performance, engineers made 100 simulated runs on the engine and the thing showed no signs of slowing down or making less power. They have revised the front accessory drive to help with belt longevity in an effort to save racers money and eliminate any concerns with belt slippages or failures.
Rumor has it that Cobra Jet racers in the hairiest combo will have nearly 1,000hp at the end of their toes when driving the car. Outside of the dyno cell apparently engineers made hundreds more drag strip passes with many coming below 8.99 seconds. Of course that is as specific as the guys got but we’re thinking that they something for the COPOs, the quickest of which have been into the bottom 8.30s during competition.
