Bryan Hyerstay had an awesome 2016 NHRA season in Competition Eliminator. He finished number two in the nation behind only Doug Doll who just so happened to have one of the most dominating seasons in the history of the class. What made Hyerstay’s year even that much better was the fact that he was competing in a G/Dragster powered by a billet, air cooled, boxer VW engine! This diminutive car was ripping off eight second elapsed time all year long, grabbing Wallys, and delighting fans with its unique sound and choice of power plant. Hyerstay capped his year with a win at the world finals at Pomona. It was pretty awesome.
This is not to say that the year was without challenges. As you will see in this video that was posted back in September, Hyerstay and crew had one heck of an incident on the starting line while out testing. You will see him stage the car, bring the revs up, and then the motor seems to run away momentarily before erupting in a giant ball of fire which does a pretty good job of enveloping the whole car.
Obviously whatever this was got fixed because Hyerstay had a very strong run during the closing months of the season. Proof that no matter what you are racing can get weird in a split second when you least expect it!
Here’s to hoping for another strong year of competition out of the little VW powered machine in 2017.
What would be even better is if half the video wasn’t of some guys finger.
Great front row seat coverage of a thumb
should have just posted the still, forever lost time on a finger clip
maybe the camera man built the motor…..
I’ll give it a thumbs up on the video! Dumbass!
