Normally we would sit on a video like this until Friday and give it to you as part of our traditional Parting Shift to end the week but we’re flipping the script on you today as David Ongano sent us this video of his sweet Quarter Horse II Mustang making laps at New England Dragway this past Saturday. Ongano’s car is powered by a really, really pissed 331ci Ford small block that is naturally aspirated. It is a violent, hard launching, front end pulling machine that runs down into the 9s with David making the gear changes with great precision.

The really neat part of this video is that David took footage from nearly every angle you could think of. We see under the car facing rear, under the car facing front, on the rear bumper, inside the car, and a few others we can’t even remember right now. The two minute video is action packed, cutting from one run to the next. The first launch that shows the rear tires and suspension at work is pretty revealing because you get a front and center look at the pure shock load the rear end, slicks, and suspension get when Ongano steps off the clutch with the motor wound up.

We celebrate the men and women still running stick shifts at the track because their numbers aren’t exactly swelling. Don’t get us wrong, there will be stick shift cars until the last breath of drag racing is drawn but the automatic is the dominant transmission at the strip on any given day or at any given event. Dave seems like a pretty experienced wheel man because as best we can tell, the guy is hitting the shifts at the right time, leaving hard, and getting the job done. It is always tough to judge the emotion of a driver through a video but there’s one point during this one where Ongano pumps his fist in a sure sign that he just saw a win light. We LOVE stuff like that.

Since today is Sunday and there’s a long week before we get to the Parting Shift, we’ll seem this one the Starting Shift!
