If you talk to any professional race car driver they will tell you that the least stressful part of their entire existence is actually driving the race car. That is the thing that they are naturally born to do. The thing that keeps them awake at night. The thing that they relish most in their lives. They will also tell you that the endless appearances, handshaking, baby kissing, photos, selfies, and photo sessions are the things that they dread. But there are exceptions to every rule and photographer Mark Rebilas seems to be one of them. In this cool video which was shot as Mark was doing driver portraits at Don Schumacher Racing shows us, who the person behind the camera is makes a huge difference and not just for the quality of the images.
Rebilas lets us in on some of the technology he uses to capture and review images real time, he shows off the smoke machine technique he has been using for a coupe of years to get great images, and he talks about the side of the job from his perspective.
We were suitably impressed with the massive plastics hung everywhere so that Mark could block all the incoming light into the “studio” and control it the way he wanted. In many aspects of life seeing “how the sausage is made” really is a bad idea (especially when it comes to sausage) but in this case it is really an interesting and fun window into a world we don’t live in.
Bottom line? Mark Rebilas is a bad ass and other bad asses, even the nitro powered one recognize and respect that a lot. A cool video and a fun watch!

Mark has great instincts as a photographer. DSR made a good choice hiring him to do the work, and from what I can see from the video these new images will be awesome. Love that backlit smoke stuff!
