Half Mile Drags! Action Coverage From The Revvolution Shift-S3ctor Indianapolis Airstrip Attack

(Words and photos by Jacob Marshall) – Racing on an airstrip used to be a necessity for early hotrodders. With nowhere else to go, racers turned to old airstrips and lakebeds to wind their cars out. But as racing increased in popularity and racetracks began sprouting up all around the country, the number of events at airfields began to decrease. Nowadays airstrip events have become a rarity, making the Revvolution Shift-S3ctor Indianapolis Airstrip Attack, a special treat. Half mile, side by side, all out racing down a runway gives today’s sports cars and supercars a chance to experience their full potential, potential that’s usually cut short on a quarter mile.

As a result, the event was chuck full of Turbo Lamborghinis, Shelby mustangs, Audi R8s, Vipers, Vettes, Hellcats, and other high speed terrors everywhere you looked. But it was the driver of the Trailblazer SS that interested me, physics be damned! He pushed that cubic block of a truck down the half mile as fast as the rest, putting a few Vettes to shame. Overall the event ran very smoothly, with both standing start and roll races taking place continuously for hours. The only small hiccup in the mojo came as a result of a 220 mph twin turbo Lambo that decided to fly too close to the sun…and lit on fire. But the event safety team was quick to respond, and avoided what could have been a much worse disaster. Thanks to the help of Ignite Racing Fuel and Speed Society in sponsoring Indy’s first airstrip event, the day was epic. And while being there is always best, enjoying this kick ass collection of car photos is a close second.

First time attending a half mile drag for me and a lot of local gearheads. We all had similar opinions, really cool cars but not a spectator sport. Glad I had free tickets…
