The NHRA Phoenix event is underway as you are reading this but we wanted to share this recently dropped NHRA video that looks back at some of the most memorable funny car final rounds in Winternationals history. Starting with the first one in 1969, Lewis Bloom takes us through the years and the runs range from explosive to fast but all of them have their own stamp on history.
Being a Massachusetts guy, I believe that the best NHRA Winternationals funny car finals involve people from Massachusetts so the two that show Al Segrini winning in the most dramatic fashion possible (one blowing up in a fireball at the stripe and the other fragging a clutch in the same place) are personal favorites. Many people like to say that the NHRA season doesn’t really get cranked up until Gainesville and most of the eastern US competitors get fired up but we love the history and tradition of the Winters. Since the 1969 race, funny cars have been a part of it.
