This weekend the NHRA will be attempting to run a National Event at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pennsylvania. We say attempting because the weather forecast is so horrible looking that we have not seen one as bad since Maple Grove of last year. We’re kidding of course but with the opportunity to see big numbers and national records exists the possibility to see a riverboat go paddling by some years. This may be one of those years. So to take your mind off of that we dug up this rarely seen video featuring action from Da Grove in the early 1970s.
You’ll see tons of door cars, lots of slingshot dragsters, a few rear engine cars, and the list goes on and on and on. Like pretty much every drag strip that has been around for decades, the place looked a whole lot different back then. The aluminum canyon of stands was not present, the tower building is not here as you recognize it, and there are several other things that you’ll notice weren’t created yet. The staging lanes are in the same place, however and that’s one of the ways we locked this one in as being Maple Grove.
If you are a fan of east coast drag racing you will likely recognize many of these cars and names. If you are not, you’ll revel in the sheer awesomeness of the cars and the high quality of the video. Yes it lacks sound, but put on a pandora channel or something and enjoy this drag racing trip to the past from Maple Grove Raceway.
Oh, while you are at it, do the anti-rain dance for those guys and girls in PA this weekend. They are going to need it.
Wonderful! Spent nearly every weekend there from 1975-90!
