(Photos by Thomas Sayers) – We have to sincerely thank BangShifter Thomas Sayers for scanning and sending us this awesome load of historic photos taken during the 1970s at the Super Stock Nationals. By the time these races were held the Super Stock Nationals had matured into one of the better known events in the country. The middle 1960s versions of the race caused the same kinds of hysteria that the Lights Out events have caused in Georgia. People were all over the place, the track was packed, and everyone knew that the baddest cars in the country were all going to be there with their best foot forward.
Today, York US 30 Dragway has returned to its roots as an airport and there’s no longer any drag racing on the old track. Remnants of it remain but some recent expansion prevents vehicle traffic on the old return road and into the old staging lanes. Trust us on this. We were there last winter and we tried to find a way to see some of the crumbling asphalt that represents the last vestiges of the old track.
Bret Kepner told us that there was a single year in its existence that York was not NHRA sanctioned and that was 1971. The move to the AHRA sanction was made in protest to show their disgust at the NHRA for moving the Summernationals to Englishtown, New Jersey. It went so well that they were back in the NHRA fold by the next year.
You’ll love the cars, the people, and looks of 1970s at York. Be sure to click on the images and expand them for a better look. Yeah we wish we were at the 1970s Super Stock Nationals as well!

friggin awesome. Wally Booth’s Gremlin. Nice!
Yeah awesome, two of my all time favorite cars; Paul Blevins’ P/S Vega and Snake’s ARMY F/C. Thanks.
Love it. My mom swears we went there once while camping nearby but I don’t remember it. Probably around 1972.
Hey Mr. Amos. Hope you’re well. I used to talk to you at the Larson open house. I have lots of your discs. Bee On Video is great. Everybody please check them out.
I would drive almost two and a half hours just to see the events at York US30. I use to get there on Friday and sleep in my car on a back road near the track no hotels for me back then.
