Del Worsham’s career had established him as a half of fame drag racer BEFORE he captured the NHRA funny car title in 2015. From the scrappy match racing kid who survived hairy race tracks, burns, and living the hardscrabble life of a nitro warrior on the road to the event winner who operated successful two car team for years, to the top fuel champion racing for Alan Johnson and now one of the elite club of racers who has won both top fuel and funny car titles, the man is headed for the hall when he hangs up his spurs. Even cooler is that he has some racing stories that few people on Earth can match.
Lewis Bloom goes after one of those stories in this week’s NHRA history lesson. Worsham talks about running funny car and top fuel at the same event, specifically at Indy in the 1990s. He did it multiple places but that weekend in Indy, life got complicated when he started winning in both cars. The best laid plans went immediately out the window and a hectic weekend ensued. You’ll also learn that Worsham STILL manages to drive a top fuel dragster and a nitro funny car on the same day during the season. Confused? You should be. Watch the video below for an interview with Del.
I’d forgotten that he did that back in the day. Who else ran TF and FC at the same event? I know Pat Austin did something similar by running TAFC and TF dragster at the same event.
