Enough about the weather. What everybody wanted to get down to was racing, and not just qualifications, and Saturday at the Holley Hot Rod Reunion 2017 delivered. Where do we start? We can look straight to Mendy Fry, who was hot off of her win at the March Meet in Bakersfield, California earlier this year and ready to keep carving notches into that belt. There was Adam Sorokin in the Champion Speed Shop digger, who despite grenading an engine nearly every pass (one in particular went up in a big amount of fire), kept clawing his way back into the staging lanes for more. You had the “Man o’ War” Mustang and the “Down Under Thunder” Camaro among the Funny Cars facing off against each other. You had Ron Huegli in the “Tiki Warrior” Monza Funny Car fogging out the mosquitoes with each and every quarter-mile burnout that he ripped throughout the afternoon, and you had Fuel Altereds. What more needs to be said? Fuel Altereds, man! Nanook and Havoc and Rat Trap and Bradford’s bellowing and screaming to the heavens…and that’s just a couple of the classes! From the moment the track was ready, the racing was on and moving, with packed stands filled with people who were happy to sit in the shade as race after race went down in the Kentucky sun.
