Nothing against the car show, but the action at the dragstrip was where the real show was going on during the Holley Hot Rod Reunion! With Top Fuelers, Funny Cars, Gassers, Nostalgia Super Stocks and the Straight-Axle Mafia all making appearances, it’s precious little wonder how, even on a sweltering day like Saturday, that the stands were jam-packed with people wanting to see cars going rounds. Top Fuel was Mendy Fry’s to lose, with Jim Young and Adam Sorokin chasing after her.
The gassers were something else altogether. As the multi-colored Willys rolled into the water box, another photographer elbowed me: “If you want to practice your wheels-up shooting, this is one you need to watch”. He wasn’t kidding. Don Moyer’s AMC 401-powered Willys took to the sky every time in a graceful ride out, followed by a quick hop back up on the 1-2 shift before making it’s way down the track. And then there is one of my absolute favorite cars to shoot, the “Crazy Grandpa” 1957 Corvette driven by Bob Cook. There isn’t a bad way to shoot that beauty!
