HOW STREET CAR RACING and DRAG-AND-DRIVE GOT STARTED. The Inside Story From David Freiburger Himself!

We’ve just announced our own Drag and Drive event, after 20 years of participating in them, so I thought it would be appropriate to share how this whole side of drag racing first got started. With the first Drag Week in 2005, the world changed and this became a phenomenon once thought to be insane but now beloved by so many. Watch the video below as David talks about the inspiration, the early days of street car drag racing, and what it means to folks today.

I know that when I went on Drag Week in 2005, with a 1956 Bel Air wagon that didn’t look like it could drive across town, the adventures began and haven’t ended since. This is the kind of stuff I live for and I realize that isn’t necessarily a good enough reason for everyone else, but just watch this video and you’ll be excited too.

Video Description:

Here’s the story of how street car racing went mainstream! I was on staff at Hot Rod Magazine during the creation of the legendary Hot Rod Fastest Street Car Shootout in 1992, and I was the editor when we started Hot Rod Drag Week, which was the origin of drag-and-drive racing. I’ll tell you the stories of how those events began, and I’ll go way back to the 1940s through the 1970s to show you how hot rodding has always been the quest to find the fastest street car.
