Iconic Bodies Gallery: The Drag Machines Stir The Soul And The Gearhead Passions In All Of Us

(Words and photos by Doug Gregory) – Call them historic or iconic or whatever – this kind of stuff represents some of the best to ever take a lap down the track. How about a pro stock Plymouth Arrow with door panels, carpet, and cranking windows…? Nostalgia pro stock clearly shows what a pro ‘stock’ car should look like verses the funny cars used in pro stock and pro mod today. The Warren Johnson tribute Camaro laid down the quickest passes of the weekend with a string of 7.ohs. The Arrow entertained with sky-high dry hops and wheelies. Seeing these cars make laps is like unearthing a time capsule revealing what was great about that era.

The fuel altereds are still the bull-riding equivalent on the drag strip. Pure Hell is supposedly winding down the touring so its appearances in the future could be few and far between. Rat Trap slit a camshaft late in the program after gaining cheers for a near half-track burnout. Reportedly the Bradford’s Fiat lost three pistons and the block when they let the magic smoke out around 1,000ft. The new Nanook was flying with some mid-6 runs on what they called ‘shakedown’ passes. Getting to see the Kellison ‘Zorro’s Charger’ in person was a treat as well. Whether these rides raced, cackled, or just showed off they were all a treat. I had to snag a t-shirt of the ‘one-eyed, one-horned, flyin’ purple, people-eater’ Vega. So much character in this stuff. Enjoy.
