The Other Racing Long Car: Check Out This 1980s Film Of Jim Jet Nelson’s Jet Limo At Great Lakes Dragaway

With McTaggart showing us all the way to have big time fun with a germ infested, cast aside, potential rolling meth lab in the form of his Cadillac limo, it triggered a memory about another racing limo I remember from years back. While McTag’s has been charging hard into the corners, the car you’ll see below does not turn well at all. In fact it does exactly one thing properly and that is haul ass in a straight line.

I’m talking about the “Mercedes” jet limo that Jim Jet Nelson ran for years around the country, presumably making good money the whole time. I remember seeing at New England Dragway and just kind of reveling at the whole package. It was super long, it was cool that the body covered the whole workings of the jet unlike a jet dragster that just has them exposed, and Jim could put on a show. He went for the burner pops with gusto and that’s the type of stuff that people love.

This video was made at Great Lakes Dragaway, likely during the Olympics of Drag Racing. You can hear Al Tucci in the background screaming and yelling about the car and you’ll get a look both in and around the car as Nelson fires it, stages, and runs down the track. One of the camera guys, who you can see for a brief second is named Michael Panek and he went from having never held a camera in his life to one of the prime Great Lakes Dragaway guys and eventually became a shooter on the NHRA tour.

This is fun stuff!
