Awesome Historic Drag Video: 1968 US Nationals – The Eliminators – A Sweet 1960s Look At The Big Go

I’m not going to lie to you. I’m heading out to work as part of the NHRA announcing crew a the 60th Chevrolet Performance US Nationals on Tuesday and I have not slept in a week. Yeah, I understand that Indy has become “just another race” when you are watching on television or following online, but when you are there and surrounded by nearly 1,000 race cars, it is a totally different kettle of fish. 34 pro mods will be on hand, the best sportsman and pro drag races in the world, and special events like the Mopar Hemi Shootout,  Traxxas Shootout, and more will keep be screaming from Wednesday until the end of the event on the following Monday. Look forward to daily BangShift coverage from the race!

The 1968 US Nationals served as a launching pad for many famous names in the sport of drag racing and cemented at least one racer as a living legend. The names of the guys in the winners circle read like a hall of fame inductee docket: Garlits, Vanke, Lombardo, Gianino, etc. Thanks to friend of BangShift.com Dawn Mazi-Hovsepian, we can show you this killer video of the event!

This was the race that really locked in Don Garlits as one of the all time greats. He won the race for the third time, and for the second straight year by wading through more than 80 fuel dragsters to take the win. Rather than blather on about the results, we’ll show you the actual race, in three parts, courtesy of Dawn Mazi-Hovsepian’s killer YouTube Channel. Dawn is a great photog and writer and she also has a clothing line for the ladies who love the strip. Check out Drag Strip Girl.
