(Words and photos by Jacob Marshall) – Chitown’s King of the Street is where the smack talk stops. One of the oldest un-prepped grudge style events in the country; KOTS, is held at the historic Great Lakes Dragaway, and never disappoints. With $41,000 in cash changing hands at this fall’s event, and $13,000 of that going to the winner of the Sr. class alone, tensions are high and racers come from all over the country. To keep in the spirit of the event’s street racing origins, races are conducted without test passes and run heads up off of a modified tree with amber lights removed. Once racers see the stage bulbs afire, they wait for green and put their money where their mouth is.
As with every KOTS, this year was not without its usual dose of drama, with many big names like multiple time winner Plumber Kevin getting eliminated early on. But the biggest surprise came during the senior class final, when the Hate Tank failed to complete a run against Slow Pony, allowing Slow Pony to be the first driver to win both the Gangster and Sr. class of KOTS at the same event. Gathered below are some of the cars piloted by those bold enough to attempt and put down four digit horsepower on an un-prepped track.
