I’m in a land speed racing kind of mood as the ECTA season opens in just a couple of weekends out in Wilmington, Ohio and we’re in final prep ode for the race. I went hunting for some cool LSR footage and came up with this great video from El Mirage which shows racer Burl Brown making a 177mph shot across the famed dry lakebed in California. Burl is at the wheel of a AA/Fuel Modified Roadster and he does a nice job keeping the short, powerful car between the wickets on the rough dirt course. Having been to Bonneville, Wilmington, Maxton, and Loring, El Mirage is definitely on my list of places to visit in the near future to take in some action. Every different LSR location has its own foibles and according to the guys who have been racing at El Mirage for years, the dust at this place is its signature as the ground surface is made up of powdery silt.
This car sounds fantastic with its big 500+ CI engine working away and making great noise on its way down course. We’re wondering if this is a license pass because it does seem like the car has more in it and that Brown is trying to maintain a constant speed for the last several hundred yards of the course. You grizzled land speed veterans would know better than us but it did seem as though Brown lifted and maintained speed before the finish line.
License pass or not, this looks like big fun and something we need to get out there and see for ourselves!
