(Words and photos by Doug Gregory) – The bread & butter of drag racing pictures is the launch. That moment when the power is released, slicks wrinkle, the chassis twists, the nose gets light, and the game gets moving. Very little of the available power is needed for the burnout so though that is entertaining the real beef is in the launch.
This isn’t a flying eighth-mile speed contest – this is a throw everything you got from a dead stop to that 660ft mark. Whether you call it hook, bite, or traction the success or failure of a run is supremely dependent upon maximizing the ability to get moving from the start. Shooting the launch from close-proximity can be tricky because, just like the Christmas tree, you have to anticipate what is going to happen. Inevitably you end up missing some of the best action, but if you keep at it you will be rewarded with some killer action shots folks will enjoy.
Of note in here:
The Lowhorn-n-Lark show with the Falcon and Lark gassers repeatedly lining up and standing tall
Tony McConnell’s ‘Falcon Around’ popping the nose up on every clutch-dump
NOTE- the cars mentioned above are three-pedal machines which is more the norm for these folks than the exception
Reher&Morrison BBC-powered black Vette was hiking the nose up with authority
434ci SBC-powered ‘Tin Man’ Chevy II turning consistent 6s with ease
