This Modified Hayabusa Motorcycle Uses A Hydrogen Peroxide Rocket To Power The Rear Tire – Not Thrust Driven, Wheel Driven Rocket Power!

This Modified Hayabusa Motorcycle Uses A Hydrogen Peroxide Rocket To Power The Rear Tire – Not Thrust Driven, Wheel Driven Rocket Power!

The name Francois Gissy is no stranger to the pages of BangShift as we showed you all kinds of cool video from the record setting ride he took atop a hydrogen peroxide rocket propelled bicycle last year. The bicycle ride was completely nuts and awesome to watch, especially with the rocket providing the thrust for a run that achieved a top speed of 177mph…on an actual bicycle, not something trying to be a bike, we’re talking about a flipping bike here. At about the same time, Gissy was working on another project, not as a record breaker, but as an exploratory venture. This was not a bicycle, but a highly modified motorcycle and it would also use a hydrogen peroxide rocket, but it wouldn’t be thrust driven.

Like the US Turbine-1 dragster we showed you video of yesterday and like cars running the Turbonique Rocket Drag Axle in the 1960s, this Hayabusa is wheel driven, with the power to turn the wheels being harnessed from a rocket engine. Turbonique used a weirdo monopropellant but Gissy’s ‘Busa used pure Peroxide in a pressurized tank and a silver screen. This video shows the bike making a test run and while it doesn’t achieve an incredible top speed, it is exciting to watch and admire. As we said above, Gissy built this thing as a rolling test rig and it looks like a stretched drag bike from hell. It sounds like nothing else you have ever heard, too. When Gissy test fires the rocket a time or two it’ll make you jump if your speakers are cranked.

We think it is completely awesome to see what is probably the only such machine in the world make a speed run in anger here. This is the most extreme and modern example of what Turbonique’s ultimate potential is or was. We give Gissy all the credit in the world for having the stones to sit atop this wild creation.
