There have been lots of “drag races” down the straight at Sebring over the years but they’ve mostly been short contests where two guys are trying to get to the next corner ahead of each other. After a successful trial last year, the management of the track has announced that they will run a dedicated drag racing series on the straight at the track and people will have ample opportunity to get our and use their street cars to hammer the eighth mile course. This is yet another example of options that are presenting themselves to drag racing fans and newbies across the country on a near weekly basis. With a bunch of tracks being refurbished and opened back up along with programs like this, there seems to be an actual, concerted effort (in most places across the country) to combat street racing and give people a viable alternative to landing on the gas down Main St. USA. This is a good thing.

The program is set to kick off in a couple of weeks and will run until June when a summer break kicks in. The series will then pick back up in September and run all the way to December. The action will be run on Thursday nights and it is geared toward street legal cars. It sounds like the format will be a pretty typical test and tune night with the track offering several hours of run time in a time-trials format. There has been no mention made of any sort of classes, point series, or complications of that manner.

We’re sure that if this thing takes off you will see it expand into a mode formalized deal. We think it is great that one of the most iconic road courses in the country is opening its arms to hot rodders, drag racers, and anyone seeking king the need for speed.
