(Words and Photos by Joe Grippo) Well, if you are checking out BangShift.com we can only assume you are a fan of Muscle Cars and surely have heard of or even attended shows like MCACN, MusclePalooza and Muscle Cars at the Strip. But have you ever been to an NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event? These regional sportsman only races are chockfull of killer muscle from all decades from the 1950’s right up to the latest factory offerings of the Big Three. The classes showcasing the most Muscle are Stock and Super Stock Eliminator, it’s a literal rolling car show. Here you will find screaming, high-revving small blocks, big block grunt, clutches and high-tech automatics working in concert delivering massive wheel stands and single digit quarter mile et’s in the higher classified cars. Juxtaposed with those are a myriad of other combos sporting everything from Thermoquads and fuel injection to front wheel drive and even pick-up trucks. Variety is everything and Stock and Super Stock has everything. These machines are some of the most science out pieces you will find in any automotive competition, with some combos having been refined and massaged for over fifty years! Modern day muscle car is well represented by Factory Stockers like the 2008 and up Cobra Jet Mustangs, Drag Pak Challengers and COPO Camaros, along with the front wheel drive SS/GT conversions there is something for everybody. The engineering is second to none, super sanitary builds with killer paint and graphics, some are like show field restos but will drag the wheelie bars and rip a 9-second ET. Just killer stuff.
These gallery shots were taken at he recently contested Lucas Oil Divisional race at Maple Grove Raceway in Mohnton, Pennsylvania. If you even remotely dig drag racing and muscle cars you owe it to yourself to attend on these events held throughout the country. Do a little research on the class rules and classification of combos also, talk about diving down a rabbit hole! Check out the gallery…
A quick thanks to NHRA Division 1 Director Dave Mohn, the Maple Grove Raceway staff and new track owners the Koretsky family for granting me media access to shoot starting line photos.
Traction was NOT a problem!
