Morning Symphony: The AWD Turbocharged Battle Between A GMC Syclone And An Opel Calibra

Eight cylinders might be the favorite, but never ever underestimate the power of a properly tuned six with a snail breathing a different kind of life into it. Some of the most wicked machines on this earth make do with half a dozen and some boost…and not just the Buick Grand National, either. The GMC Syclone is one such beast. It’s turbocharged 4.3L V6 was stout enough to put Ferrari on alert (much thanks to the trumpeting that Car and Driver did on their behalf) and it’s badass-in-black look, the GM calling card of performance in the late Eighties and early Nineties, is perfectly applied: the Syclone can devastate in the quarter, thanks to four wheels turning.

But GM had a few machines in the stable that could do that. One was over in Europe, making a name for itself in DTM racing. It’s the Opel Calibra 4×4. It did come with a V6, but that isn’t the one you wanted. You wanted the 2.0L 16-valve DOHC turbocharged “C20LET” mill. Stock, it’s layout reads like a built block: KKK-16 turbocharger, Mahle forged pistons, and a Bosch ECU. Landing just in time for the sport coupe craze in 1989 and lasting until 1997, the Calibra had one other trick up it’s sleeve: it was the most aerodynamic car in the world with a drag coefficient of 0.26, which is one hundredth worse than a first-generation Honda Insight. The Calibra is slick, and potent, and in the right hands…rather, in the hands of whatever maniac built this one…can dig it’s four wheels in just as hard as the Syclone. Place your bets and praise the boost…
