Ultimate 64 Challenge Coverage – The Coolest Cars At Mountain Park Dragway!

(Words and photos by Doug Gregory) – Back with more from the Ultimate 64 Challenge event at the revitalized Mountain Park Dragway in Clay City, KY.  I told you all in the first installment that Scotty was working hard to draw folks and give them more than this place had been offering.  This one featured some match racing with a pair of grudge racers and a pair of Top Sportsman standouts.

Two Luminas (when was the last time you heard that) and two tri-5s.  Most folks will recognize Brad Elgin’s (B-rad) silver Lumina sporting BES power with a little chemical enhancement.  Kortes Motorsports brought out their bad, black, blown BBC-powered Lumina to duke it out and make some big noise with Ricky Needham behind the wheel.  Lester Johnson’s ‘Excalibur’ ’55 has been a hitter in the Top Sportsman ranks for years and set a new door car record during this event.  (Editor’s note: Johnson’s ’55 is the quickest and fastest ’55 Chevy in drag racing history.)

Shortly after this event at National Trails he dialed 6.0 and won the event.  Bracket car dialing SIX-OH…!!!  Lester’s son, Andy, took the drivetrain out of his Top Dragster and stuck it in this wild ’57 in only a week.  His performance is just a tick off his dad’s and since this event he’s even bested his pops a time or two.

Family friends Cheyenne and Gavin Stanley were sharing the seat in their Ford-powered dragster and going rounds.  While strolling through the pits we happened upon two Pontiac-powered Firebirds from San Antonio.  The Moreno&Sons team was making their way up to Norwalk for the Pontiac Nationals and stopped in at Clay City to participate.  Long way from home and it was a pleasure to watch these in action.

Enjoy these shots and stay tuned for one more group to close out coverage of this event.
