Drag racing loves its lists. We love qualifying lists, points lists, and performance lists of all shapes and sizes. Heck, DragList.com has been at it for decades now, documenting an insane history of the sport through performances large and small. Papers like the old Drag News would have lists in each issue and it got to be a thing where guys would challenge each other to earn a better position and stuff like that really drove the popularity of the sport in the 1960s and 1970s. All this being said, we think that Drag Illustrated Magazine’s Top 8 lists are brilliant, bookmarked, and will be checked every week at BangShift mobile world HQ. Why? Because these things are being maintained, monitored, and updated on a daily basis by pal-o-BangShift Bret Kepner.
I’ll be honest. I didn’t really get why he would be texting and emailing me for eighth mile top fuel and funny car speeds or some other wing ding piece of data at races I have been to this year but it all makes a lot of sense now. He was building and updating the lists. This is not just a collection of lists that follow NHRA classes. We’re talking everything from nostalgia top fuel to electric motorcycles. Small tire classes, mountain motor pro stocks, all the various current iterations of pro mod, and pretty much any class you can imagine that someone, somewhere is competing in right now. The speed and ET marks in top dragster and top sportsman are fascinating even!
Bret has been keeping such notes and records for some four decades and we think it is awesome that he and Wes Buck of Drag Illustrated have teamed up to make this a living, breathing record of drag racing performances in real time. If someone goes ahead and runs some insane number tomorrow night at a race? Yeah, it’ll be updated. Drag racing lends itself to stat keeping and the fact is that there are numbers out there to be had. Three second radial passes, 200mph NHRA pro stock bike passes, a top fuel run in the 3.60s, and all of the rest of the stuff that real drag race fans love about the sport are on the table each and every week of the season.
You don’t have to be a drag dork, a history freak, or someone who has not escaped their mom’s basement in a month to love this stuff. It is the one and only place you can roll down a single page on the internet and and see who the current big dogs are in every class you can dream of. This RULES.
