(Photos by Charles Wickam) – When the dust settled on Sunday afternoon at Royal Purple Raceway, Doug Kalitta and Ron Capps had won in top fuel dragster and nitro funny car respectively. With their wins came some fun history. Capps moved into the number two all time spot on the funny car win list, just about one hundred Wallys behind John Force. Kalitta’s history was more personal but still great. With his 36th career win he passed Don Garlits on the all time list for top fuel. He also had qualified for his 100th race in a row, which is really something.

Many fans out there want to see both of those guys holding the big trophy at the end of the year. In fact Capps has the most wins without a championship and we’re pretty sure that Doug is also in the top five of that category if not closer to Capps than that. They have both raced hard and with success for many years but neither has been able to claim the championship as their own. We all remember how close Doug Kalitta came only to the thwarted at the literal last possible moment by Tony Schumacher at Pomona several years back. He wants it bad as does his entire crew.
