NHRA World Finals Sportsman Wheels Up Coverage: Our Last Blast Of Cool Stockers and Super Stockers

(Photos by Wes Allison) – Since the 1960 NHRA Nationals that Wally Parks shrewdly held in Detroit where all the manufacturers could watch, stock eliminator has been an important part of the NHRA drag racing scene. The class has morphed and changed over the years and the types of cars that have risen to prominence are varied and interesting. For example, BJ Graham was the number one qualifier at Pomona in a 1975 Mustang II! For those of you familiar with the class you know that every class in stock has an index that racers try to go quicker than. In the case of the Mustang II, it is a pretty soft number and BJ Graham punched the Ford down under that index by the largest margin of any car in any other class.

While the romping-stomping big block cars, the modern Factory Stock cars, and the screaming stick shift small block cars may be a little more visually appealing, we have respect for every competitor hammering the track and racing for a Wally on the weekends. We know you do too. Here’s a good group of fun iron!
