NMCA Announces Xtreme Pro Mod Class – Eighth Mile Action And The Gloves Are OFF

Well here’s another interesting development in the drag racing world. Hot on the heels of their Factory Super Car class announcement last week, the NMCA has dropped another announcement that pertains to the creation of a new Xtreme Pro Mod class which will be contested at all of the NMCA races in 2016. Dropping the quarter mile format and moving to their eighth mile format that so many other series and  organizations have taken to, NMCA loosened up the mechanical restrictions on competitors and in the process opened their series up to a whole new group of racers.

Previously the NMCA pro mod class was run reasonably close to what we would call “legal” pro mod cars like those that run in NHRA and IHRA competition. Being that there are vastly more guys now running “outlaw” style combos and doing so on their eighth mile format, we can see why this move was made.

We love rules packages with lots of “any” words in them. There are lots of them in the rule package linked below. Nitrous cars can run more than 950ci, turbo cars can run twin 98mm turbos, blower cars can have screw pumps on them at spin ’em at a dizzying 119% overdrive, etc. These are just a few of the rules but you really need to get in there any look at it. There are going to be LOTS of cars running very deep into the three second zone in this class and many racers who may not have competed with NMCA before.

It is going to be an interesting year, not that we didn’t know that already. This is another piece of the show and people are going to love it.

NMCA Announces 1/8-mile Xtreme Pro Mod Class

All six NMCA events will include these unique 3,500HP muscle cars starting with season opener on March 10-13 in Bradenton, FL
Santa Ana, Calif. (January 11, 2016) – The NMCA Competition Team is proud to announce the exciting VP Racing Fuels Xtreme Pro Mod class featuring the world’s fastest and most unique doorslammers in the country. Competing on the eighth-mile drag strip, these machines represent old school and modern muscle cars but with a radical twist. They are chopped, channeled and scaled down for a wicked looking package to go along with the nitrous-injected, blown or turbocharged engine

combinations. Fans will be on the edge of their seats as these race teams let it all hang out at over 200+mph in under 4-seconds on the 1/8th mile.

“The decision to change the Pro Mod class was made after lots of discussion with our valued racers and it fits within our ProPledge commitment to do what’s best for our series,” said Dave Werremeyer, Technical & Communication Director. “We’re all looking forward to the thrilling runs, close racing and intense competition in this class.”
“The Pro Modified class has evolved from the legal realm to the far end of the spectrum with little-to-no-limitations,” said NMCA General Manager Rollie Miller.
Werremeyer continued, “We’re planting ourselves firmly in the middle by allowing the racers to have fun without being handcuffed. The new VP Racing Fuels Xtreme Pro Mod class has its roots in the Pro Mod world but with an outlaw twist to it, similar to several popular 1/8th mile shootouts around the country.”
Payout for VP Racing Fuels Xtreme Pro Mod winners will be $5,000 plus contingency. Past NMCA Pro Mod winners have earned well above $7,000, with some close to $9,000, when payouts and contingency are combined. NMCA entry fee for car/driver is $175 with no additional tech card fee. A Thursday test session at the season opener in Bradenton will be only $75 and will feature a prepped track. In addition, parking spots at all NMCA events are reserved for VP Racing Fuels Xtreme Pro Mod teams that notify the NMCA event team in advance. Finally, an NMCA official will visit every Xtreme Pro Mod pit space, before each round of qualifying and eliminations, to notify teams of class run time, pairing order and run order.

As cool as this is, as well as the logic behind it, I’d still rather see them run the 1/4 mile. Regardless, it’ll be an orgy of horsepower!

Maybe the reason for the 1/8th mile format is insurance related or maybe the length of the shutdown areas at some of the tracks raced on.

No, it is related to the fact that there are two places left for quarter mile pro mods, NHRA and IHRA.There are 3-4x the amount of eighth mile cars out there and that’s who they are looking to draw.

Yep. The 1/8th mile world is on fire. Drivers need to be on point. Nitrous is more competitive and a turbo car needs to be on. All the magic is in 1/8th mile. No top end charge, no room to correct for a mistake.
Love it or hate it, it makes for really exciting racing, with insanely fast door slammers.
