(Words and photos by Doug Gregory) – Quiet cars again. This time it’s the straight-axle cars. I won’t refer to them as ‘gassers’ because though these do run on gas….having a straight-axle was never a requirement to be a ‘gasser’. Many way back when were not straight-axle cars and many were dual-purpose vehicles being driven to the track. Still, this event has a class just for those without independent front suspensions and this is the first album of those. For this event we saw a lot of cars we hadn’t before and saw a few of the regulars really step up their game. The action photos definitely prove it so.
We’re going to try shooting a feature on Dwayne Rader’s ‘Rebel Rouser’ that we’d shown you a couple times in 2015. At this event it finally made a couple passes-in-anger with those zoomies singing the song of our people. This is no recreation of a car….it is the restored car his dad built a half-century earlier and was a real ‘barn find’. This gallery is more-diverse than the previous even though they share the non-articulating front suspensions. Ford, Mercury, Chevrolet, Willys, Jeep, Studebaker, Nash and more are represented. We’ve even snuck in a few shots of the pit bike race which was eventually won by a kid schooling all the others.
Enjoy the photos.
