Over 150 miles an hour in the quarter requires a parachute, according to the NHRA. And for good reason…no shutdown area is long enough for brakes only when you are coming in hot. I don’t care what track you’re at, you want to maximize useful asphalt, and the parachute is elemental in making that happen. Most racers who have the equipment use the equipment and all is well, but for Chad Larkin, his parachute wound up bringing him as close to a Code Brown as anybody ever needs to be. Running at the Horsepower for Hope charity event at Bonne Terre Drag Strip in Missouri, Larkin was running strong and was putting a nice lead on a Camaro when, just after he crossed the finish line with the win bulb on, the parachute decided to escape the car altogether. Larkin managed to get the Corvette slowed down enough to not hurt much, but at the end of Bonne Terre is a swampy mess of cattails and tall grasses that is the last place you’d want to park a blower car. At least the Corvette didn’t go swimming…making it to the next round wouldn’t have been so easy!
