When people think of diesel drag racing they mostly picture pickup trucks hammering down tracks with soot clouds looming large above them. Well as diesel performance pervades more and more of the sport, the idea that those vehicles have to be truck based is less and less of a priority. Guys like Ryan Millican (who you will see in this video driving his green Nova) are showing up to events like Lights Out and No Mercy bringing the boost, the soot, and the performance that no one would have ever dreamed a diesel car could pull off even 5 years ago. Hell, he’s so sick he’s using drag radials to try it.
In this video we get a face full of action from the pro mod class at the recent Diesel Thunder race held at Gulfport Dragway in Mississippi. It’s freak show central and we say that with love. The Mustang is clearly Cummins powered, there’s a nasty Ford truck in the mix as well.
While the cars and trucks are still a small sliver of the overall picture in drag racing, they are hardcore and bad ass. Managing the power to keep the tires, no matter if they are slick or radial, hooked to the track is nutty. You’ll notice traction seems to be at a premium in this video and that could be condition of the fact that most of the vehicles at this event were likely heavy trucks on street tires making potato salad of the starting line all day. Long story short, there wasn’t a lot of race track to work with here and the in-car videos from Millican’t Nova prove that. They also prove that he is one hard driving son of a gun! He works his ass off to get the car down the track.
That is the most smokey but totally underwhelming drag racing I have ever seen – but hey – at least there’s no Chevy powered cars in it!
…….. and that’s how mosquitoes became extinct.
