(Words and photos by Steve Murphree) – In my first visit to El Mirage I noticed that the support and spectator vehicles were awesome! I think that because El Mirage is so much closer to SoCal than Bonneville there are many more cool vehicles that show up. These are some of the neatest ones that I caught on camera. I should also note that El Mirage is a destination location for many light aircraft so throughout the weekend there seemed to always be some kind of aircraft overhead.
(Editor’s note): One of the coolest things about land speed racing, especially from a pure gearhead perspective is the fact that the creativity often does not stop with the race cars. On the salt and virtually everywhere else these men and women race you will see the coolest trailers, haulers, and push vehicles. Here are the ones that really caught Steve’s eye!
Nice pics, loved the ute. Camping out in the desert with all the crazy machinery around is half the fun of El Mirage.
If I won a huge amount on the lottery I would buy a huge piece of land, import half the Sahara Desert and have Britain’s very own dry lake bed racing….
