Six Speed Showdown: Two 1960s Icons Throw Down At 2018 Rocky Mountain Race Week!

Six Speed Showdown: Two 1960s Icons Throw Down At 2018 Rocky Mountain Race Week!

The death of the manual transmission has been a subject of conversation for years now. Many old-school types make it out to be the end of an era, while there is a growing contingent of people who believe that the manual trans has truly become an outdated fixture. I fall into the former category…I’ll concede that there are some badass automatics out there, but there is nothing, and I mean nothing, like rowing your own gears. A manual trans can make a crappy little four-banger S-10 awesome to wheel around, so how does throwing all of the power down through a T-56 box sound to you?

Two of the bigger hitters at this year’s Rocky Mountain Race Week were the Pontiac GTO that comes down from Canada and the Ford Fairlane that’s based out of Colorado. Both cars are sincerely wicked, both cars run six-speeds, and just because we like seeing the impossible happen, the GTO can pull 21 MPG on a cruise.

Seriously…why run an automatic, again?

I agree a manual trumps an auto every time. Raced my 2004 GTO 6spd for the 5 yrs I owned the car and loved every minute doing it! Had over 200 passes and sold it with the original clutch in the car. Best time was 12.73@ 108.

As automatic drivers aides for everything become prevalent my interest drops and I am more interested in boats sad but true
