Someone Actually Took A GM Futurliner Down The Dragstrip At Norwalk! Twelve Tons Of Trouble In The Right Lane!

Yesterday we gave you a quick in-depth look at the GM Futurliner, the giant bus that General Motors made for their 1941-56 “Parade of Progress” shows across the United States. They are huge, they are extravagant, and they are…well, radically underpowered would be putting it mildly. With a curb weight close to 33,000 pounds and a GMC 302ci inline-six trying to move everything along with 160 horsepower and 268 ft/lbs of torque, the acceleration can best be described as “glacial”. Nowadays Futurliners are seen as investment vehicles, since out of the twelve built, nine are known to exist and seven are in any sort of useable condition. This is #10 (the same one that we shot pictures of at the Tri-Five Nationals) on the quarter-mile at Norwalk. It’s difficult to explain what is going on here…is it a exhibition pass? Certainly, because seeing one of these in motion is a rare event. Was it done on a dare? Had to be, because we don’t know any other reason as to why anybody would do this. It’s kind of like seeing Warren Sapp on “Dancing With The Stars”…something just doesn’t look quite right about it all, but just for the sake of seeing a giant Art Deco bus earn a timeslip, let’s see what happens.
