Sportsman Action Photo Coverage From NHRA Charlotte: From Factory Stock To Comp Eliminator, It Is Here

(Photos by David Whealon) – It was big fun watching the sportsman class eliminations at the 2018 NHRA 4-Wide Nationals at zMax Dragway in Concord, North Carolina. Virtually the entire slate of NHRA sportsman action was on hand from the alcohol classes to the SamTech.edu Factory Stock Showdown, to competition eliminator, and all the rest of the classes hardcore drag racing fans love. David Whealon knows where to have his lens pointed and when because he has some awesome stuff from this event and it is all on display below.

While the pro categories run the race four-wide, sportsman action is still held in a traditional two-wide format. Last year we ran some time trials with the “super” class cars four abreast and it was really fun to watch. Why not run the eliminators four wide? Well the fact is that the timing system does not (yet) have the capability to process and work with four dial-ins or four different indexes in a class like comp. If and when that day comes, we bet that there will be come fun action seeing those style cars compete in quads.

So there we have it! Our last blast from a great weekend in Charlotte. Did we tell you that David shot two races that weekend? We’ll be back with more on that soon!

Here’s our last batch from Charlotte – click the photos to enlarge and them!
