24 rounds in a row. A feat never accomplished in the Countdown era of NHRA drag racing, a sweep. Steve Torrence and the CAPCO Contractors top fuel dragster ran the table starting after the 2018 Chevrolet Performance US Nationals and absolutely leveled the competition at every turn. They won on pedal-jobs, they won on hole-shots, they won on the strength of their tune up, they won blowing the car up, they won setting low elapsed time. They won. They won all of it and it is one of the most impressive feats in the last 25 years of top fuel drag racing.
In his post race interview, a reflective Torrence said with pride in his voice, “They can never beat us, they can only tie us. We’re the first people do ever do this and that means whoever does it next is second.” A simple statement but one that rings as true as the blue skies Pomona Raceway sat under all weekend in Southern California.
The final round against Tony Schumacher was dramatically awesome. On a hole-shot Torrence snuck by the final race the Army Top Fuel team ever competed in as that sponsor is leaving the sport. The margin was thousandths of a second and it came because of Steve’s lightning quick reaction times. As one of the best leavers in the category it was not a shock, but it was so fitting that it ended this way.
The party went late, late, late into the Pomona night on Sunday.
