Drag racing is a sport that we know and love around here, especially its history as it pertains to tracks that have withstood the shifting stands of time and continue to operate today. Richmond Dragway is one of those places and it is celebrating its 55th birthday for the 2019 season. We had the chance to swing by the track that’s located minutes from the Richmond, Virginia airport just to take a peek last year when we headed to the NHRA Virginia Nationals. It is neat as a pin and well maintained.
Over the years the track has been sanctioned by the major bodies including NASCAR, the NHRA, and the IHRA (current sanctioning body) and it has been a pace of competition for some of the sports largest and most legendary names.
We love this piece that was done by Richmond Magazine because it not only rattles off the history of the track but of some notable people that have worked there. Richmond’s female announcer Nita Barber has been wheeling and dealing both on the track and in the tower for decades. Her story alone makes this pieces totally worth the price of admission (free).
If you love drag racing and the tracks that are vital to its continued health and vitality help us celebrate the longevity of a good one here. Viva Richmond Dragway!
