Straight Axle Launches From The Nostalgia Nationals At US60 Dragway – Action Photos Galore!

(Words and photos by Doug Gregory)-  We all have wanted to yank the front tires at one time or another.  For some even a glint of daylight under one tire is enough to claim ‘wheelie’ status……indeed a noble goal.  For sure we want someone to capture the glorious moment in video or still photographs.  We are here to testify that the ‘Steel Lady’ Nash, with the reputed weakest motor and heaviest girth, let more than a microscopic level of illumination slip past the lower edge of its front tires.  Mission accomplished.  The ‘Lil Tzer’ ’23 T stripped the splines off its axles in the attempt.  The Toxic Falcon wowed the crowd with a long and impressive exhibition of weight transfer.  The ‘Bad Mojo’ ’57, sporting its new blue shade, showed us this time it’s got the suds for stardom.

Dustin Corn only had one wild wheelie this time in his ‘Lumpy’ Corvette and he managed to not break anything plus go rounds.  Win-win.  Even the pit bike race got into the act with the three-wheeler immediately turning left causing it to get hung up on the wall.  No one was hurt and most had a good laugh.

The wheelie kings of the day were Mike Lewis and Ryan Pope, both running Mike’s ‘Lark Ness Monster’.  Over the winter he changed the rear gear and stepped up from a 750cfm carb to a 950 then a friend threw an awesome tune on it.  They ended up bending the wheelie bars and on the car’s last pass of the day I had at least three frames showing a rear tire off the ground.  It was also pulling a good 8-12” wheelie on the 2nd-gear shift.  Well worth the trip to see and capture that.

Hope you’ve enjoyed our coverage even half as much as we did being there.
