The Baroque Bomber: Could You Get Down With A Pro Street Ford Granada?

The Baroque Bomber: Could You Get Down With A Pro Street Ford Granada?

I hate Ford Granadas. I hate them because they are the final form of “milking a platform to death”, one that had already been spread as thin as the peanut butter on a twenty-five cent pack of crackers. It’s yet another gestation of the Ford Falcon platform that dated back to the early 1960s. With a decade plus to get things right, did it? It wasn’t the fastest (Mustang), wasn’t the most economical (Maverick or Falcon), wasn’t pretty by any stretch of the imagination (any other model) and was stuffed like the honeymoon suite at a five-star bordello. Ford couldn’t be bothered to put in any gauges past a speedometer and fuel gauge, yet had the gall to compare this squared-off automotive affront to a Mercedes. The Granada sucked.

That’s my opinion, anyways.

But every time I voice my venom over the Granada, I get those who have nice things to say about the 7/8ths scale Gran Torino. I’m told that I don’t see the car in the right light, I’m assured that not every Granada is craptacular, and that since I love every weird old Mopar of similar vintage, to just shut my mouth and move along. Well…until the day I see Lohnes hug a DeLorean and mean it, my opinion stays, but for those who are kinder to the mid-size Ford, here you go: Someone took a 1978 Granada ESS and went nuts with it. I wish they hadn’t stuck the “Pro Stock” scoop on the hood, but at least the 351 under the hood has some oats and there’s cage work and useable seats inside. Someone even went to the trouble of matching up the interior, and regardless of my feelings about the car, I appreciate that touch.

Am I swayed by this car? Can I like a Granada? ….nope. But I would love to find out what that 351 is all about just once. Ok, maybe twice.

I could if it was a UK Mk1 Ford Granada – especially if it was the rare fastback coupe.

I’m with you on the Granada. I like a whole bunch of Henry’s stuff out of Dearborn but hate the styling of that car.

A different scoop would cure about all the ills of that rig. Put a simple Boss 429 scoop on it, or even a Harwood style mid-70’s style one, and you’ve solved that little dilemna.
What it really needs is a 500+ inch Lima-series, with a tunnel ram, with plain old stamped steel blue-painted Ford valve covers, and torque for days. All problems solved.

I think the profile shots (minus the scoop) are pretty kick-ass…I approve! (Disclaimer: My family owned a silver and maroon ’76…)
