The European Screamer: Meet The Ford Taunus That Came From Estonia To Run Drag Week!

Blunt truth: I could go forever not knowing anything about Andres Arnover’s 1972 Ford Taunus except for what it looks like and be quite content. Part of me likens it to a 1970s Escort, the other part thinks of the Ford Capri (especially from the doors back) and all of it has just the right amount of 1969 Torino flavor to it. It’s an aggressive little beast, with it’s widened rear haunches and it’s no-joke all-Ford howl that comes courtesy of a 400ci Windsor block that’s being boosted via a 71mm turbocharger. Total output of all that madness is somewhere north of 1,500 horsepower. Keep in mind, that’s all crammed into a package that’s about the length of a modern-day Ford Fiesta sedan and weighs in at a modest 3,100 pounds or so…fast is the name of the game and this car has been around a few blocks, all of which have seen what the eight-second capable Taunus can do when it is set on kill.

But I’m just smitten over it’s looks. Focused on the wrong thing? Eh…look at some of my other vehicle favorites. I’ve done much worse than a German-built fastback two-door that can take a Windsor block like a champ.

Google a pic of Ford Cortina GT 1972. We had one that I learned to drive with. There were lots of them in Canada, after the Lotus Cortinas of the sixties and right before the German Capri came along to replace it. Very similar to the Taunus, the repair manuals were even shared.

Why wasn’t this built and sold in the UK as a Cortina coupe? It would have been a slightly cheaper alternative to the Capri and would have appealed to the fleet sales market.
