The Perfect Recipe: This Turbocharged Fox Notchback Is The Right Combination!

The Perfect Recipe: This Turbocharged Fox Notchback Is The Right Combination!

You don’t mess with the combination when success is guaranteed. You might try a different thing here or there, but when the engine, trans, suspension and even the hook is right, you just don’t screw around with the potion. The notchback Fox Mustang might be the most popular drag car we see all year, every year…and why wouldn’t it be? Light weight, roomy engine bay, reasonably sized, short wheelbase without being scary, and an aftermarket that will cover damn near any and everything your heart desires…if you can’t make one of these babies move out, give up the car hobby and learn how to play a musical instrument. You don’t need to tub one out or even jam in a big-block to make one hustle. This blue Notch that J. Malcom caught on camera is exactly what you need to do to have a shot at being a racer: start with the coupe body because it’s just a bit lighter than the hatchback. Find a potent mill that’s making at least 500 horsepower reliably…in the case of this one, there’s a turbo adding fun, but you can hook up a bottle, stick a blower through the hood (or don’t) or you can just let a naturally-aspirated unit do it’s thing. Fox Stangs are great small-tire cars, so read up on how to make one stick with a 235 or 275 drag radial and get to work. Make sure you don’t skimp on the safety stuff, get some lessons on how to make a pass down the 1,320 if you haven’t done so before, and soon you, too, can be in the running for your first drag race trophy!

Like it or not, the Fox body Mustang is probably the best street/strip car that won’t break the bank. I’ve been beaten by lots of them. The first street race I ever saw was with a 93 GT. It was red with black stripes. I was a Firebird guy, but loved that car.
