This 1966 Dodge Coronet Is Dragin’ Wagon Perfection – Factory Looks, Stoker Power, Stock Interior

This 1966 Dodge Coronet Is Dragin’ Wagon Perfection – Factory Looks, Stoker Power, Stock Interior

Last week I ran an item about a cool Ford Galaxie Country Sedan wagon and there was a fun debate that popped up about why wagons are cool. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and admittedly some of my love for old wagons comes from the fact that the big wagon era was all but dead by the time I was old enough to understand what cool was. Guys who were forced to drive them around as pizza delivery cars, or people who were trapped in them for long road trips likely do not think they are all that great but I love them to death. Now, that Ford wagon was a stocker and this 1966 Coronet isn’t. It is still a street car but it would eat that big ol’ Ford up for breakfast if given the chance.

Powered by an Indy built 415ci stroker small block, this thing has Cragar S/S wheels on the corner, skinnies up front, a 100% stock interior, and the seller claims the paint if 95% original as well. The non-stock scoop will tweak the hardcore Mopar guys but the rest of us normal people are likely into it. You can see the Cal-Tracs bars peeking out ahead of the rear tires and then there’s all the glass associated with the station wagon and its various windows.

While not what you would call a “Mopar guy” I have my favorites and the Coronet is at the top. I love these rather plain looking cars more than anything else. I know they lack the flash and dash of most 1960s Mopars but that may be why I like them so much. Crisp lines, simple styling, and all the raw power available that the rest of the more sexy cars got, the Coronet is a yeoman bad ass. This wagon is a spectacular iteration of the classic form.

You don’t necessarily have to love wagons to love this Coronet, you just have to like things that are awesome and cool.

I totally dig it! Good job, you nailed it.

Absolutely zero reason for it to “need a BIG block”. Don’t listen to the nitpicker’s who likely never built anything.

I love the car, but why’d he set up the expectation of underhood ramair with the deleted high beams and not follow through?

Why anybody would go to the lengths of creating such a masterpiece and then keep what has to be one of the most horrible colours ever to come out of a spray gun is beyond me!

I would paint it in classic Ramchargers livery as a rolling tribute…

That’s my favorite color… it looks even better when it is faded!
