We often (incorrectly) pin the use of Detroit Diesel blowers on hot rod engines as the real start of supercharging for the young hot rodders around the country. For the wealthier among them there were other options. From the weird “pancake” superchargers that pre-war guys used, to units like this amazingly well preserved S.C.O.T supercharger and intake manifold that is currently on-sale on eBay for $12,500. This is a real one, meaning it is not one of the cool and accurate reproductions that were made after the original company went out of business.

These things were expensive and that is why only the bucks up dudes had them. It was likely a S.C.O.T that was on the top of Tom Cobb’s engine when he raced Vic Edelbrock Sr. at Goleta in 1948. Cobb had the money. Edelbrock had nitromethane and a head for engines. Either way, these Italian manufactured superchargers have been around for a while. That being said, the photos with this ad are extensive and they seem to show a unit that looks about brand new. The interior of the case looks good and that’s of course really important to get the rotors to have any sort of seal so they ca produce any power at all.

The Italmecanicca company produced these superchargers and we have read that S.C.O.T stands for “Supercharger Company Turin”. Is that accurate or hot rodding lore? Your guess is as good as ours. We do understand that only a couple hundred of these things TOPS ever made it to the USA and because we’re guessing they were all used under duress, very few actual units survive. Is it worth $12,500? That’s a buyer question. Some guys will go to all the lengths to get the right period stuff. You’d have to be deep pocketed to snag this one.
