Of all the massive news stories that broke in the late season and during the early part of the off-season of NHRA Camping World drag racing, the creation of Tony Stewart Racing’s NHRA top fuel and funny car teams might have been the biggest. Since the close of the 2021 NHRA Finals, the work has been happening at a breakneck pace in Indiana to get things organized, set up, and prepared for the upcoming Phoenix test session before the NHRA Winternationals in February. During the 2021 PRI show, I had the chance to sit down and chat with both Leah and Tony. To say that they are dedicated to the cause would be the understatement of the decade.
These two, recently married, are living in their motorhome in the parking lot of the race shop that is being used by both the team of Matt Hagan and Leah to get all their stuff ready. The two talk about hiring, they talk about organizing, and they talk about how the funny car team in basically turn-key and the dragster team has been going from the ground up to be ready.
This is an interesting discussion and a window into the mad thrash that is their lives at the moment…and will be forever. Racers talking racing!
