Ok, now THIS is interesting! The guy who put this car together did it with an idea in mind and he executed it to a T. Basically the mythical back story that he created is that in 1972 the famed Two Lane Blacktop 1955 Chevy beat a 1964 GTO in a street race for pink slips and the owner of the ’55 took the Pontiac and parked it in his barn. In 1974 the ’55 was mangled in a crash and the owner (The Mechanic character from the movie) took a look at the GTO and decided to make another street killer out of it.
Now that ends the mythology of the car, let’s talk about the reality of the thing. For starters it is Pontiac powered. A 461ci Poncho motor that lays down nearly 500hp at the wheels sits between the fenders. The car has a 2004R overdrive automatic transmission, a rear end with 4.33 gears and a limited slip in it, and American Racing “Daisy” wheels.
The car is wearing the same “Grump Lump” scoop that the ’55 Chevy wore in the movie although we wish it were painted white along with the same gray primer color as the move car. The interior is mostly stock with the addition of a couple of gauges and a shifter.
We kind of think this car is genius. Many of you may hate it but we’re kind of used to that by now. We don’t think this would look good on many other cars. If tried on a smaller car like a Mustang or Camaro it would be kind of odd looking but on the longer and larger GTO pulls it off pretty well.
Adding in the Pontiac engine, the steep gears, and the fact that it has enough horsepower to be really, really fun this has win written all over it.
Needs a tunnel ram, then it’d be good. Otherwise it’s a poser
If the \’55 wrecked and he took the hood scoop from it, why wouldn\’t he also take the M22 Rock Crusher?
The car in the movie was a ’70 Judge.
It was not a Judge. It had stripes and a spoiler like a Judge, but wasn’t a Judge.
For the sellers story to make sense, this car would have a tunnel ram 454 and M-22. Take the scoop off and just have a GTO clone.
There is nothing even remotely cool about anything related to that boorishly snoozer of a movie, “2-Lane Blacktop”…
Pretty sure he wouldn’t ever run a automatic much less a 200r4.
I would change the hood scoop to an early Super Duty one and install a Tremec 6 spd. Other than that the car looks good.
Lose the scoop
Traditional street machine. No souless cross breeding. Not a turbo or nitros kit in sight. Actual carburetors? What’s next? Don’t tell me he actually built it himself! Check writers take note.
I like it. 2 lane or not. Sits nice and the American daisey’s look good.
The scoop has to go.
Flat hood with this intake setup, or a tunnel ram hanging out, no scope.
Two lane actually did use a real judge in the movie. Orbit orange, They replaced the judge decal to a Gto decal. Same car was used in One Adam 12 scene. Also used in a kojak scene. The 55 Chevy was a iconic American car as well.
