Don Garlits’ recent success in the seat of Swamp Rat 37 is well known around here as we’ve been following the project since we first head about it. While the team did not eclipse 200mph on their first outing, they did run 184 and establish themselves as the fastest electric drag car of all time. Being that there’s some really zooty battery and electric motor technology being used on the dragster, the crew had to chase down some bugs at the track and they did so in fine fashion. The dragster did dip into the sand trap when the parachutes failed to deploy during one of the passes.

We have seen still photos and on car video of Garlits making his passes at Bradenton but we’ve not actually heard from the man himself until now. Garlits recently sat down with the guys from the Fox car report and gave a great interview about the project, what he sees as the future of drag racing, and what the team’s plans are for their next outing in a couple of weeks. As we have maintained the whole time, this project is cool for the fact that Garlits is the dude in the seat and because they are chasing a legit record by trying to hammer 200+ in the quarter mile. This project should also inspire a bunch more cars that will then try to better the efforts of the whole SR-37 team. There’s no denying that electric vehicles will have some role in drag racing over the next decade and if they’re fast, all the better.

You can’t really blame “Large Father” from going all “Reddy Kilowatt” on us .. .

Many of the folks his age are whippin’ electric Hoverrounds, Rascals, or golf carts . . . .He just has to have the fastest “Willie Wiredhand” whip among the octogenarians. Just sayin’ . . . .
