Under normal circumstances my goal is really not to make people angry enough to chuck rocks at me because of something I wrote. Every now and again we try to ruffle some feathers on purpose, but for the most part we write stuff about cars and keep everyone relatively happy. I mention this because it was a couple years ago that I made some snide remarks about the power making potential of the Ford Y-Block engine. As it turns out the Y-Block community is tight knit and passionate. I got flayed by them and after a barrage of video submissions showing high performance Y-blocks, I retracted my dumb jokes.
I say all of that to set up the video below. This is a 333ci, Ford Y-block with 11.5/1 compression, a bunch of camshaft, and Hilborn Mechanical Fuel Injection as noted by the presence of the tall “stacks” on top of the engine. During this dyno pull you’ll hear the engine sweep from 4-7,000 RPM and that 7,000 RPM place is a neighborhood that few Y-blocks have been able to tread. The engine sounds spectacular in the upper octave range and makes peak power at 6,700 RPM. We’re not sure what it is going into but whatever the car or truck, we hope it has some steel gearing to be ale to take advantage of the power peaks with this combo.
So Y-block fans, score another one for you. This engine is pretty awesome and never did I know you can wrong this much power out of one at those engine speeds. I guess you really do learn something new every day….even when it comes to ancient engine families.
