Legendary small tire racer Dwayne Mills walked away from an incredible wreck during Lights Out Six at South Georgia Motorsports Park yesterday when his 1968 Camaro, the famed “Golden Gorilla” took flight at the eighth mile mark at the track. We have multiple angles of the wreck posted below and like others of its ilk, we’re pretty sure this one will leave you with your eyes bugging out. The car goes into a power wheelie and is carrying so much speed the air literally picks the thing up like a sail to the point that the machine is completely vertical and skidding along on the parachute pack.
Things get truly scary when the car lands on top of the wall. Thankfully for Mills, the landed in such a manner that it kicked the car to the right and it landed on the track instead of on the outside of the wall where things could have taken a truly horrible turn in the grass. Mille was banged up in the wreck, but OK. The car, which has been the source of so much history of the years is another story. We are not sure what the immediate plans are for the machine, whether it will be fixed or whether Mills will go another direction, but the good news is that the car did its job and protected him.
This is truly nutso stuff.

How come no live feed this year? I loved it last year….it felt like you were actually there……
there is a stream. just google lights out 6 stream
Ok – thanks!!
no worries- motor mania tv covers ALL kinds of small tire – outlaw races including BOTH of ducks RVW races every year
It appears the car didn’t like the glass front clip.
This sort of thing happens so often in the small tire classes. I don’t understand why they don’t run wheelie bars. I know there’s a rule against running them, but to me it seems like it’s a safety issue.
At least he wan’t hurt. Can’t say as much for that (formerly) beautiful car
Totally avoidably. Driven faster cars than that. Was on the throttle way to long.
Incorrect. Closing the throttle with 45psi in the intake manifold doesn’t reduce power until the manifold can get down to vacuum, which means burning that air charge. Car in the other lane runs a custom wheelie protection system that kills ignition to guard against the same thing. Lifting does almost nothing on a car like that, for at least 1 full second.
Was totally avoidable. Tried going for the record and bit him. And a second to reduce power output via throttle. Really?????????????????
Yes, 1 second.
In my opinion I think the people who make the rules were expecting the Tuners to refrain from any action that may put a Driver in harm’s way knowing there’s no wheelie bar’s on board. I think they (rule makers) expect the drivers to be able to stop a blow over condition.
Let’s see, I’m guessing around 3000 horse power at 200 miles an hour!
Nope, once the front wheels gets off the ground there’s simply to much momentum for stepping off the loud pedal to prevent this from happening. Not to mention any windy conditions. I’m with Jerry, let’s put wheelie bar’s on those cars before something BAD happens !
See Ya at the track! Flash
