(Video credit: VictoryRedColorado Youtube Channel) – If someone were to force me to make a list of the favorite drag cars I have ever seen over the every growing span of my announcing career, Randy Dolensek’s 1969 Mercury Cyclone would be a top ten finisher for sure. This monster Mercury competes in the ARP Nitrous Pro Street category of the NMCA and it stands as one of the most unique machines in the category and in all of the world of door slammer drag racing. Its emerald green color, factory style paint and decal package, and nitrous sucking 598ci big block Ford engine are the major elements that make it cool. The wheels up launches and seven second elapsed times are another. Randy happened to be racing at the 2015 NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing and thankfully the VictoryRedColorado YouTube channel was there shooting video as well. They recently released a cool feature on Dolensek’s car and we’re excited to share it with you here.
According to the caption on the video, Dolensek is now making some changes to the car for the 2016 season where he plans on running the full pull of NMCA events. The car has a 25.2 chassis under it and that is staying put. Holley EFI has been added to the engine and according to VictoryRedColorado, he is taking the engine from 598 down to just under 500ci. Why? Basically the rules of the class favor a smaller engine where lots more nitrous can be fed into it than a larger one that is restricted to a smaller jet. Randy’s car is certainly on the larger end of the size chart for the class but if he is working with Jim Plympton on a gnarly Ford power plant, we’re thinking that this car will be one to watch for more than the looks.
You’ll see the car running consistently in the middle-ish seven second zone on pass after pass in this video. I’m pumped up to see this car down at the NMCA opener in a couple of weeks!
That was one awsome reaction and launch on the last run. And it sounds Brutal!
