Lookin’ Back: Watch The 1989 Houston NHRA Event Broadcast To Prepare For This Weekend’s FOX Show

In 1989, the NHRA made its second trip to Baytown, Texas outside of Houston to put on the Supernationals. The event continues for the 32nd time this coming weekend at the same track it was run on back then. I love watching the old races to prepare myself for the upcoming events, if for nothing else to have some historical reference notes and to understand the context of the sport back then. 1989 was the year that Bruce Larson, Maynard Yingst, Tim Richards, and their crew handled their business and won a world championship.

It was a crazy year in top fuel as well with racers like Gary Ormsby, Joe Amato, and Shirley Muldowney throwing down week after week. Scott Kalitta was relatively new on the scene and he was racing with Connie acting as crew chief. 1989 Houston would be the scene of an amazingly fun moment for that team as well.

This weekend the NHRA is LIVE on the FOX broadcast network on 3pm-5pm eastern on Sunday. We’re not talking FS1 we’re talking the actual broadcast television network. It will be a fun deal, and interesting show, and hopefully we leave with some of the same memories and smiles that we see on the faces of the people in this broadcast. Unlike the 1989 race, we’re hoping for no rain and finishing the sucker on the prescribed schedule!

Lots of cool people here and lots of cool stories. Eddie Hill racing an old car after a wreck, Bob Glidden as human wrecking machine, and the list goes on and on.
